Kim Payne, another quilter and committee member, said the festival would unify the past of making quilts for need and the present of making them to use as a wall hanging or other decoration. At the Altavista Area Chamber of Commerce-sponsored festival, quilts from across the region will be on display, while others will compete for ribbons in judged categories including pieced and hand quilted, pieced and machine quilted, machine embellished, appliqué, group quilt, antique quilt, miniature quilt and wall hanging. Other parts of the festival include a display of the Smith Mountain Lake Quilts of Valor, which are given to veterans’ hospitals, and vendors selling fabric, patterns, kits and notions.
