The Love House and Hutchins Forum, which is the home of the Center for the Study of the American South, is hosting a quilt show by South Carolina textile artist Ellen Kochansky in its gallery. But without the traditions of the past, she couldnât make the textiles currently on display in the Love House gallery. The South Carolina textile artist channels the rich history and personality of the South â” with a contemporary twist. In collaboration with the Center for the Study of the American South, Kochanskyâs textiles will be on display at the Love House and Hutchins Forum through April. Kochansky said her favorite textile on display at the gallery illustrates a part of her personal history.

Each quilter takes a journey from the first notion to start that first project to the point where she is today. This week, I’m inviting you on a journey from my tentative first stitches to the more challenging pieces sitting in my sewing room today. Tying the corners with red yarn was a nice touch (suggested by the magazine writer) and this cotton-backed quilt was quite warm. From this project, I moved onto a maple-leaf wallhanging that came with full instructions, including how to make half-square triangles!

Large has found that modern quilters seek, “a look that appeals to a wider range of people - it appeals to the younger customers because they’re making those baby quilts that they want to match the décor in their house (not necessarily just pink or blue) and they want other quilts that they can just have in their living room and their family room that go with the décor that they’ve got going in those rooms. She said that quilts produced from Quilt Patch designs should declare, “‘I’m something that’s in this room to be cuddled under and I belong here - I don’t just belong in a bedroom. Through Martingale & Company, they produced a book of their patterns called ‘Tis the Season that was released in 2010 and continues to serve as a bestseller for the publisher. We carry earth tone fabrics - lots of beiges, browns, greens, reds - we don’t do a lot of real bright, vibrant, modern fabrics.
