Latendresse, who has been quilting for 25 years, wasn’t planning on owning a quilting business, but when the opportunity came up, she decided to give it a try. The store sells fabric, yarn and anything else necessary for quilting, and it will continue to offer quilting, knitting and crocheting classes like the store before it. The Love House and Hutchins Forum, which is the home of the Center for the Study of the American South, is hosting a quilt show by South Carolina textile artist Ellen Kochansky in its gallery. But without the traditions of the past, she couldn�t make the textiles currently on display in the Love House gallery. The South Carolina textile artist channels the rich history and personality of the South �” with a contemporary twist. In collaboration with the Center for the Study of the American South, Kochansky�s textiles will be on display at the Love House and Hutchins Forum through April. Kochansky said her favorite textile on display at the gallery illustrates a part of her personal history.

Each quilter takes a journey from the first notion to start that first project to the point where she is today. This week, I’m inviting you on a journey from my tentative first stitches to the more challenging pieces sitting in my sewing room today. Tying the corners with red yarn was a nice touch (suggested by the magazine writer) and this cotton-backed quilt was quite warm. From this project, I moved onto a maple-leaf wallhanging that came with full instructions, including how to make half-square triangles!

One of the quilts that has been documented by the Oviedo Woman�s Club in preparation for Quilt Documentation Day. Layers upon layers of history - some dating as far back as the Civil War - will unfold before curious eyes this weekend when the Oviedo Woman’s Club holds its first-ever Quilt Documentation Day. This weekend’s event, which was formed through a grant provided by the Sunshine State Quilters Association, marks the second Quilt Documentation Day in the East Seminole County area, and comes on the heels of a special training event held earlier this month at the Oviedo Woman’s Club. After a quilt is registered by its owner, organizers next begin documenting the quilt’s history, recording all known information and stories about the quilt maker, along with tidbits about the quilt owner. This step can be time-consuming as quilts can feature a variety of techniques (applique, reverse applique, trapunto, embellishment, English paper piecing, foundation piecing, among others), styles (American-based Amish; Baltimore Album, Crazy and Hawaiian; Native American Star; Seminole; and more); and block designs (Log Cabin, Nine Patch, Double Wedding Ring, and Cathedral Windows).
