Billed as the largest independently owned quilting store in Canada, My Sewing Room boasts more than 10,000 bolts of all-cotton fabric, along with a robust selection of denim, wool and flannel. Sewing machines are available in the 8,000-square-foot store which, depending on the model, (prices range from around $300 to $13,000) can do digitized embroidery and machine quilting in a lot less time than grandma used to manage by hand. The machines, if you want it to look like the real deal hand thing, there’s ways to do that,” said Anne Dale, owner of My Sewing Room. In addition to fabric, sewing machines, kits, batting, and notions, the business offers quilting classes, courses to help clients master the sewing machine they’ve just bought, and how-to instructions to make anything from a sock monkey to table runners and placemats. My Sewing Room got its start in 2001, a natural fit for Dale, who began sewing for cash at a young age.

Colorado Northwestern Community College offers quilting classes with instructor Linda Pinnt beginning in September. Vail uses two long commercial sewing machines to stitch large quilt tops â” her own projects as well as othersâ creations â” to batting and backing. Her foray into the quilting world began with quilting blocks she found in her late motherâs belongings. In addition to helping start a local quilting guild with others in her community, Pinnt has connected with quilters from across the world. The columnist’s current crochet project is a lavender clutch purse crocheted in linen yarn. Then I decided to crochet the purse flap from silky ribbon yarn that varies in color from pale peach to vibrant purple with pale brown thrown in for good measure. When the purse is finished, it will be the perfect place for my collection of crochet hooks â” everything from the tiniest size 14 I inherited from my grandmother to the jumbo size J that I havenât used since I went completely bonkers and crocheted a rug of cotton fabric ripped into narrow strips. This small volume may not be precisely an answer to the wildly popular âYarn Harlotâ by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, a collection of essays about knitting, but itâs a start and goes a long way toward making the case that crochet is not the ugly stepsister of knitting. Indeed, crochet has a beauty that holds its own against knitting, provided, of course, crochet is not dumbed-down in service to creating covers for extra rolls of toilet paper or covers for cell phones and other electronic devices.
