Dolores Swartz, a member of the Hatteras Quilt Guild, shows off her ‘Flower Power’ quilt at the Trunk Show held at Roanoke Island Festival Park on March 13. The local Teacup Quilters continue their show at the Park which is in the Art Gallery and will hang through March 26 Monday-Friday 9 a. The annual trunk show is part of the quilt exhibition on display in the Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park each March. Quilts were presented by members of various Outer Banks groups including the Hatteras Island Quilters and the Teacup Quilters. read more

It’s title Hawaiian Quilting Instructions and Full-Size patterns for 20 blocks by Elizabeth Root. Hawaiian Quilting Instructions and Full-Size patterns for 20 blocks is a very user friendly reference book for those wishing to commence their journey into Hawaiian Quilting. I’ve always found it quite difficult to understand the instructions for folding your pattern paper into eight, but Elizabeth’s instructions are so straight forward and easy to understand, I wish I’d come across this publication much sooner. The general instructions consist of instructions for creating a Hawaiian Quilt, specifically cutting the pattern, laying and tacking the pattern to the background, and appliquéing the design. read more

WILBERFORCE - Dazzling colors reflect a rich history in the handiwork of quilts at the National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center. The exhibit reflects the importance African-American women played in history and how they influenced American society. The quilts hold valuable lessons for visitors and reflect history lessons about how the African-Americans influenced America’s heritage. Visitors will find each quilt is a work of art, lovingly sewn to reflect the importance the African-American women played in their life. The Ohio Historical Society has two other quilt shows opening this year; Quilting Stories will be at the Ohio Historical Society Center in Columbus, June 1 through October 12 and Patterns from the Past at the Hayes Presidential Center in Freemont, June 7 through January 4, 2009. Visitors wanting to make a day learning about African-American history can being at the cultural center, where Paul Lawrence Dunbar is featured and continue to his home, the Dunbar House in Dayton, as well as, visiting the cemetery where he is buried. read more
